Tonkin Gap Project

Tonkin Gap Project

Within the Tonkin Gap Temporary Works Engineering scope, a number of items required a higher level of expertise and bespoke engineering solutions. Peritas worked closely with the on-site team to ensure design solutions were practical and could be easily implemented, in addition to being faster and more economical.

These project highlights are outlined below:

Launch Bridge Casting Bed Formwork:

Peritas value engineered the formwork design completed by the Alliance, using the lessons learnt from Peritas’ design of the new Mandurah Traffic Bridge formwork.

The formwork design was modified to allow for ease of installation, stripping and removal, incorporate access on and around the form during concrete pours, allow for varying web thicknesses and segment lengths and ensure launch cycle times were met.

Pier Formwork and Pier Cage Reinforcement Lifting:

The Alliance sub-contractor proposed to re-use existing steel forms from a previous project. Peritas re-engineered the formwork for a widened and lengthened profile to suit the project requirements whilst minimising re-work of the existing forms. Peritas also incorporated access walkways to the top of the formwork to assist in construction.

Subsequently Peritas engineered the pier reinforcing cage lift design. Peritas minimised the amount of on site welding required whilst incorporating the riggers existing equipment to simplify the pile cage reinforcement construction. Peritas has completed similar value engineering works on other infrastructure projects, reducing on-site welding from 40 hours to 4 hours per cage.

North Dive Pile Testing and Investigation:

Peritas were engaged to investigate the pile testing failure at the North Dive site on behalf of the Alliance.

Following the Peritas investigation, Peritas was engaged by the sub-contractor at the Alliance’s instruction to redesign the pile test (tension and compression) to ensure that the re-testing could be completed safely whilst incorporating the necessary construction and installation tolerances. Peritas expedited resources and prioritised the re-use of existing equipment to ensure testing did not continue to impact the program.

Broun Ave Demolition:

Peritas were engaged by the sub-contactor to complete the engineering design of the award winning Broun Avenue Bridge demolition.

The sub-contractor’s demolition methodology was significantly different from that originally proposed. Peritas’ engineering support of the demolition methodology provided assurance to the Alliance and all stakeholders around the success of the works.
